Bactrim Generic (Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole) is an antibiotic that is often prescribed for the treatment of certain kinds of infection caused by bacteria. Both Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole are used as a combination antibiotic used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, ear infections, traveler's diarrhea, Pneomocystis jiroveci pneumonia, and bronchitis. Contraindication: Important to Know
You should inform your physician if you have certain health conditions. For instance, if you have kidney disease, severe liver disease, and anemia caused by deficiency in folic acid, or low blood platelets caused by sulfa drugs or trimethoprim; do not use the medication without informing your doctor.
If you have allergic reactions to Trimethoprim or Sulfamethoxazole, you should not use Bactrim. You should also not use the tablet if you have the following health conditions:
- Anemia caused by deficiency in folic acid;
- Severe kidney or liver disease;
- History of low blood platelets caused by sulfa drug or trimethoprim.

Do not use the medication if you are pregnant because Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole have the potentials to harm an unborn child. If you are planning to use this drug, use effective birth control to avoid being pregnant during your treatment. This is because Bactrim can render some birth control pills less effective. This medicament has the potential to pass into breast milk and therefore can harm a nursing baby. This drug is not recommended for children under two months old. There are some serious side effects that may arise among older adults, especially adults taking some diuretics, or digoxin.
Instructions on Taking
It is important that you follow the prescription given to you by your physician. Do not use the medicine in smaller or larger dose. Side effects of Bactrim include:
- Headache, slurred speech, confusion, vomiting, feeling unsteady, severe weakness, loss of coordination;
- Bloody or watery diarrhea;
- Sudden weakness, sore throat, fever, feeling of unwell, chills, bad cough;
- Pale skin, rapid heart rate, short of breath or feel of light-headed, trouble concentrating;
- Flu or cold symptoms, painful mouth sores, swollen gum, skin sores;
- Liver problems, such as tired feeling, upper stomach pain, clay-colored stools, tired feeling;
- Severe skin reaction, such as sore throat, swelling of the tongue or face, fever, burning in the eyes.
Some other common adverse effects of Bactrim include nausea, loss of appetite, mild itching, vomiting, or rash. It is important to mention that the side effects listed here are not exhaustive. You should contact your physician immediately if you experience any strange symptoms.
It is important to mention that antibiotics can cause diarrhea as a side effect. Diarrhea can also be another symptom of a new infection. If you experience bloody or watery diarrhea, you need to stop the medication immediately and contact your physician.
