General Info: Uses and Effects
Chloramphenicol Generic is a group of antibiotics that are generally used for the treatment of bacterial infections. Generally, the doctor will prescribe it for the treatment of tract, soft tissue, eye, ear, and even brain infections.
Chloramphenicol, which is a bacterial preparation, works by preventing the synthesis of proteins inside bacteria, preventing them from obtaining the necessary nutrient. This tablet is very effective against several bacterial strains, such as staphylococcus, psittacosis species, Gram positive and negative bacteria, Rickettsia, E. coli, S. Typhi, Streptococcus species, and lymphogranuloma.
The Chloramphenicol drug is usually not given orally due to the severe side effects it can have on one's body. It is administered in form of liquid drops for both the ear and the eye. The medicine is also available in an ointment and capsule form. Generally, it is given on prescription and not over the counter, and is available in generic form. Chloramphenicol is purely for bacterial infections and will be ineffective when used to treat fungal or viral infections.
Chloramphenicol was approved for sale, distribution, and consumption by the FDA in 1950. It comes in several brand names, such as Chloromycetin, Anacetin, Brochlor, Kemicetine, Redidrops, and Ambofen.
