General Info: Uses and Effects
A parasite called Sarcoptes scabiei or the human itch mite causes scabies. A severe skin rash and itching caused by the mite burrowing under the skin and laying eggs there characterizes the condition. Scabies is a communicable disease which is transmittable through direct contact with an infected person and even during sex. It spreads quickly in overcrowded areas where people reside in close quarters. Such areas include prisons and nursing homes.
Eurax Generic (Crotamiton) is both an antipruritic and a scabicide. It is used to treat scabies, a skin infection caused by mites burrowing into the skin. Severe itching and fluid or pus-filled blisters or bumps characterize the condition which the Crotamiton cream alleviates by killing the mites. It also relieves itching caused by other skin conditions.
Contraindication: Important to Know
Inform your doctor of any previous allergic reaction to Crotamiton or any other allergies before getting the prescription. Discuss your personal and family medical history with your physician to confirm the suitability of this medicine for your condition. Such a history should be shared before the commencement of any treatment including surgery and dental care to avoid the risk of drug interaction.
Discuss the use of this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding to weigh the intended benefits against possible risks to a mother or the baby. It remains unclear though if the medication passes to the baby through breast milk.
Instructions on Taking
Apply the cream on the infected area. Do not swallow it or apply it to the eyes. If swallowed, seek medical attention to avert poisoning. While on the treatment with Crotamiton, if you miss a dose, do not double dose or take another dose if the time for the nest one is near.
If you are using the Eurax lotion, shake the bottle vigorously before use. Do not share the medicine with others. Also, do not use it for subsequent infections unless prescribed by a doctor. Store it at room temperature away from pets and children.
In treatment of scabies, take a shower or a bath before applying this medicine. Rub the body gently to remove the crusted or scaly skin, and pat dry with a clean towel. Mass a thin layer of the lotion or cream from the chin to the soles and between the toes and fingers.
Apply it keenly to ensure that it goes to the creases and folds between the skin. Mites usually live under the nails so ensure you trim your fingernails before applying the medicine. Use a toothbrush for effective application of the medicine under the fingernails.
Note that Eurax Crotamiton should not be ingested so do not use the toothbrush in the mouth as it could cause poisoning. Wrap this toothbrush and turf it in an appropriate place. Do not share the medication with others even if they have similar symptoms. Apply the next dose after twenty-four hours.
While under the treatment, change your clothes, bedding, and towel daily after each use. Wash all of them separately without mixing them with those worn by others in the household. Use hot water for the washing and dry them in a hot dryer to destroy all mites that may have infested the clothes and to keep them from returning.
Thungs that cannot be dry cleaned or washed should not be exposed to the infected person for at least 3 days. After the last application, take a bath forty-eight hours later to remove the lotion or cream. Ask your doctors if the persons you have been in contact with should report to a hospital for screening for scabies and for the treatment.
The itchiness associated with scabies could continue for several weeks after the end of the treatment. You may ask your doctor for other medication to alleviate the itching and the discomfort. Additionally, inform your physician if the condition persists or worsens during or after the treatment.
In the treatment of other skin conditions that cause itching, apply a thin layer of Crotamiton on the affected area. Massage it the area gently for complete absorption of the medicine. Apply it twice or thrice daily or as directed by your medical care provider.
Increased skin irritation, such as redness or itching, may occur after starting the therapy. Report to your doctor if it increases or worsens and you may stop using the medication as you consult your doctor.
The medication though rarely causes any serious side effects. However, report to your physician for review if you suffer severe side effects such as acute itching, swelling of the tongue, face or throat, dizziness, rash, and difficulty when breathing.
Therefore, the severe but rare side effects for which you should seek emergency medical help include possibly fatal allergic reaction, giant hives, any hives, and bronchospasm
Avoid applying the lotion or cream on inflamed areas, and on the eyes, face, vagina or mouth. Do not apply it to an area with oozing blisters or wounds or is raw. These are not the only possible dangerous adverse reactions so consult your doctor in case of any discomfort.
Consult the local poison center or the emergency medical unit in case of an overdose or a severe reaction from the using of Eurax Crotamiton.
Interaction with Other Drugs
To get the best out of Eurax Generic, inform your doctor of any other over-the-counter and prescription drugs, supplements, and herbal treatments that you are taking. Some of the treatments could cause adverse effects of varying degree if used simultaneously or within a short duration before the use of Crotamiton.
If you were previously using other treatments to control scabies, discuss with your doctor or pharmacist if you need to stop taking the medication as you get the prescription for Crotamiton. Inform your doctor if you take treatments for other underlying or chronic medical conditions.
