General Info: Uses and Effects
Vermox, which contains the active ingredient Mebendazole, is used to treat infections caused by parasites. It belongs to the group of antihelminthics and is suitable for treating conditions caused by hookworms, whipworm, roundworm, etc. Some of the diseases include an enteric form of trichinosis, enterobiasis, beaver fever, and the inflammatory processes which these parasites can cause.
Worms can attack patients of all ages. If their penetration into tissue stops on time, the primary infection is very easy to cure and without any consequences. Enterobiasis is a common disease, especially in children, and it attacks the digestive tract. These worms settle in small intestine and colon, and their presence can be determined if there is a rupture in the anus region (this is the most common symptom, because the worms lay eggs in that area, so it is sometimes possible to spot them in the faces with the naked eye), vomiting, and loss of appetite.
Vermox Generic is used only in mild forms of infectious diseases. It kills the parasites slowly, and for those with very severe infections, this can lead to the fact that some parasites migrate from the digestive system, causing the problems with bile ducts or perforation of the intestine. To avoid this, patients with a severe form of infection may be cured with piperazine, either instead or before of Mebendazole. This medicine disables movement of parasites, leading them to pass through the feces.
The efficiency of Vermox is proven by the fact that it is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, where you can find drugs marked as safe for use with minimum side effects.
Contraindication: Important to Know
Parasite infections are very contagious and are easily transmitted between people, either through direct contact or sharing personal things. Besides the regular Vermox therapy, the doctor will advise you additional measures such as daily showering, washing clothes at high temperatures and disinfecting stuff you use every day, as well as the rooms you are staying in. If you do not follow these instructions, the therapy itself will not have an effect. You may cure the primary disease, but the risk of re-infection still persists.
Special warnings apply to the Vermox therapy in pregnant women. This drug is in FDA pregnancy category C list, which means that its consumption carries a potential risk to the fetus, but further research is needed. If the health condition of the pregnant woman allows its use, the doctor can prescribe Vermox only in the case of intensified medical supervision. Tell your physician if you suspect pregnancy or are planning to get pregnant sooner. The same situation is if you are breastfeeding since it is not known what amount of Mebendazole is secreted into mother's milk and how it can affect the fetus.
Be sure to tell your doctor if you are taking any of the therapies for other illnesses because there are some medications that may have harmful interactions with Vermox.
Instructions on Taking
Vermox tablets are taken orally, in the form of chewable pills, or as banana-flavored suspension, which is recommended for children. If you have a problem with swallowing of this drug, which is particularly represented in children, the pill should be crushed and mixed in the food, in order to blur its bitter taste.
If you take a higher dose of the medicine than it is prescribed, digestion difficulties are possible (diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain), but these adverse effects should disappear after a few hours. If the symptoms endure, contact your doctor. Unless the physician specifies otherwise, no special diet and adjustment of the nutrition for the Vermox therapy are required.
As far as Vermox is concerned, keep the pills in dark place at room temperature, and the suspension in the original package, which is well closed. Avoid storage of the medicine in warm and humid rooms, because heat and moisture can affect the composition change. Make sure the medication is within the period of time, as it may become toxic after the expiration date.
In case of enterobiasis, take a single daily dosage of one tablet containing 100mg of Mebendazole, or 5ml of the suspension containing the same amount of active ingredient. After a few days, parasites are dead, and you should throw them out of your body through feces.
In the case of trichuriasis, or infection caused by hookworms, the treatment process lasts for three days; take one pill every morning and evening. If re-infection occurs, or if you still spot parasites in the stool, the treatment should be repeated after two or three weeks. The dose of Vermox is the same for both children and adults, while the use of this drug is not recommended for patients younger than two years.
Since Vermox Mebendazole is a drug registered on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, side effects occur in a small number of cases and are usually mild, such as short-term pain in the stomach, tiredness or vomiting instinct. If there is hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the medicine allergic reactions and symptoms, such as itching, rash, or shortness of redness may occur. If these symptoms persist, and especially if there is an elevated temperature, strangulation, or swelling of some part of the body, make sure to tell your doctor.
Symptoms that rarely occur, in an almost negligible number of cases, are the reduction in the number of white blood cells, which weakens the immunity, and the disorder of liver enzyme secretion.
Interaction with Other Drugs
There are drugs that may affect the efficacy of Vermox, but also those whose effect can be reduced if used together with Mebendazole. This applies especially to medicines from the same group, which is used to treat infestations caused by parasites.
Pay attention if you are using medication to prevent seizures or some analgesics, such as Mesantoyin or Tegretol. Cimetidine, a drug used to regulate stomach acid, can disturb the absorption of Mebendazole.
To get more detailed information about possible interactions of Vermox with the medicines you are using, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
